All Chill Tubs hard shell cold plunge pools – Pro, Original, and Lite – offer an equally refreshing cold water experience. The main differences between the models are found in size, materials and features.

Regardless of the model, all Chill Tubs cold plunge pools have a built in cooling unit, meaning they operate without adding ice. The water can be cooled down to +3 °C, but they can also be heated up to +40 °C! The combination of an ozonator and a replaceable filter ensures water purity, and every Chill Tubs cold plunge pool also includes a stylish insulated cover.

A Chill Tubs cold plunge pool can be installed almost anywhere; indoors, outdoors on a terrace, or even on a lawn. For outdoor installations, the cold plunge pool must be drained when the temperature drops below zero.

Benefits of a cold plunge pool

Cold water therapy is a refreshing experience for both body and mind and also an effective means of recovery. Top athletes have long used cold plunge pools to recover, but the benefits of the cold can also be enjoyed by any everyday hero. Cold water therapy promotes holistic well being in many ways. For example, the cold:

  • increases blood circulation
  • speeds up recovery time
  • reduces inflammation
  • supports the immune system
  • brings peace of mind

For Finns, many of the beneficial effects of the cold are familiar due to our climate. Especially those who practice ice swimming have long been aware of the effects of cold water therapy. However, ice swimming is not possible year round, but the benefits it offers can be brought to any location with a cold plunge pool – home, a sports team locker room, or a gym.

Is cold water therapy suitable for everyone?

Cold therapy is suitable for most people. However, we are individuals, so there are naturally exceptions to this. Anyone suffering from heart disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, or other health problems should consult a healthcare professional before starting cold water therapy. Persons with impaired mobility should only use a cold plunge pool in the presence of another person. Small children should not use a cold water pool at all.

Listen to your body; exit the cold water if you feel uncomfortable and exercise caution, especially when using the cold plunge pool alone.

A cold plunge pool must never be used while intoxicated or under the influence of medication that strongly affects cognitive abilities.

How long can you stay in a cold plunge pool?

There is no single answer to this because cold tolerance is individual for everyone. We recommend starting the use of a cold plunge pool cautiously and gradually getting used to longer periods. Start with dips in the water lasting a maximum of 20-30 seconds to find your own limits. If you feel uncomfortable or start shivering from the cold, exit the cold water and warm up calmly by walking around.

The water in the cold plunge pool does not need to be cooled down as cold as possible right at the start – even though the water temperature in Chill Tubs cold plunge pools can be lowered to +3 °C, it does not mean the water temperature must be lowered that far! Start calmly and lower the water temperature as your tolerance and experience grow.

More about the benefits of the cold

The benefits of cold therapy were already briefly referred to earlier, but let’s go into a bit more detail.

Boosting norepinephrine levels. Cold exposure can significantly increase the body’s production of norepinephrine – even by 200–300%. This effect does not diminish over time. The colder the water, the stronger the reaction. Even a 20–30 second immersion in near icy water produces the same rise in norepinephrine levels as a six hour walk in 16 °C freezing weather.

Power from protein. Cold exposure can stimulate the PGC-1-alpha protein, which boosts metabolism at the cellular level. Pharmaceutical companies have focused on research into PGC-1-alpha when developing treatments for obesity, diabetes, and cardiomyopathy. In muscle tissue, the increased energy from PGC-1-alpha production can improve aerobic capacity and endurance, as well as increase fatigue resistance.

Number of killer T cells. Plunging into cold water, especially in winter, can challenge the immune system and affect how hormones communicate with the body. Studies have shown that regular winter swimming leads to adaptive responses in the body, such as increased production of the antioxidant glutathione. Just a few cold water exposures over six weeks can increase the number of lymphocytes, a type of immune cell. Some studies have observed that in individuals exposed to a temperature of 4 °C for 30 minutes, the number of killer T cells increased.

Boosting the immune system. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence regarding regular cold exposure that suggests its potential effects in strengthening the immune system. Many people feel healthier and less prone to illness when taking icy baths regularly. Although the immune system is complex and difficult to study, it is believed that cold exposure can help the body adapt and become stronger against diseases and infections. There are not yet strong scientific studies on the subject, but many believe cold water has positive effects on strengthening the immune system.

Maintenance of the cold plunge pool

Cold plunge pools are easy to maintain, as cold water naturally prevents bacteria growth, among other things. There may be manufacturer specific differences in maintenance recommendations for cold plunge pools, so the instructions in the user manual must always be followed primarily.

The built in filtration system consisting of a filter cartridge and an ozonator in Chill Tubs Pro, Original, and Lite cold plunge pools enhances water purity. It is recommended to change the filter of the cold plunge pool approximately every three months and the ozonator about once a year.

The need to change the water in the cold plunge pool depends greatly on usage. For private use, it is recommended to change the water approximately every 8-12 weeks and more often if necessary, of course.

If the cold plunge pool is in a public space, such as a gym, the water must be maintained in accordance with Finnish pool water regulations.
